So many heart warming stories, wow!
Our city lets off fireworks every fourth at the park nearby. We don't head over there, because lawn chairs in our yard give us front row seats. Always a big BBQ first. But in 97, the year our daughter was home, she was 5 days old on the fourth. Delivered by emergency c-section, we had a small group of family and friends on the lawn when I decided to put on long pants to join them. I sat on the edge of the bed and GUSH my entire abdomen unzipped! I was so scared, water flowing out non stop, I called for my husband ALONE and headed for the potty.
I spent her first 4th in the hospital... thank heavens my obgyn was available by phone, he said go home and rest, he'd see me in two days... (the intern wanted to do bladder surgery - which wasn't damaged ! )
I did see the fireworks though on the drive home, in every direction every city nearby was setting their off!

For years our family would rent a cotttage on a lake nearby for the two weeks surrounding the 4th. Oh the wonderful times we had! My funniest memory though was of my wonderful brother-in-law. He'd buy a whole tenderloin for us and he'd bbq filet mignon for each of us! I was a teenager though, and nobody told me just what a filet mignon steak was, so DUH I refused to eat it for years. LOL guess they figured more for them!

My favourite Canada Day (sorry guys, but it's the closest I get to 4th July, Canadian version ... lol), would be Sparklers. As a kid, I loved writing my name in the air on a dark night with Sparklers. Do they still have those????

Okay, hubby just came home with two absolutely fabulous 2" thick filet mignons and a lovely bottle of wine, so now we're going to have a BBQ!!! WOOHOO! So, could be a memorable BBQ! History of the 4th of July..Thought this was interssting
Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men
who signed the Declaration of Independence?
Five signers were captured by the British as traitors,
and tortured before they died.
Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.
Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army;
another had two sons captured.
Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or
hardships of the Revolutionary War.
They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes,
and their sacred honor.
What kind of men were they?
Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.
Eleven were merchants,
nine were farmers and large plantation owners;
men of means, well educated,
but they signed the Declaration of Independence
knowing full well that the penalty would be death if
they were captured.
Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and
trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the
British Navy. He sold his home and properties to
pay his debts, and died in rags.
Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British
that he was forced to move his family almost constantly.
He served in the Congress without pay, and his family
was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him,
and poverty was his reward.
Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer,
Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.
At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that
the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson
home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General
George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed,
and Nelson died bankrupt.
Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed.
The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.
John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying.
Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill
were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests
and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his
children vanished.
So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and
silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price
they paid.
Remember: freedom is never free!

Hey an easy easy recipe to bbq ahead... cook your hamburgers as usual, top with a bottle of ketchup and bag of brown sugar, mustard to taste and liquid smoke (eau de hickory as Beaches calls it) and keep them warm in crockpot or oven... Great for picnics as the cooking's all done! enjoy!
