According to a report from Reuters, the European Commission could be on the verge of recommending action against the United States at the World Trade Organization regarding its stance on online gambling.

The United States has greatly hindered Europe's online gambling industry thanks to its Unlawful Illegal Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, which limits payment options for online gamblers in America—no credit cards or bank transfers among other things.

"Many publicly traded European companies, such as PartyGaming and 888.com, withdrew from the United States after Congress passed the 2006 [UIGEA], but they face possible criminal prosecution for activities before then," said Reuters.

The report said that while action against the U.S. was recommended, the European Union is hopeful that it can find an amicable solution with the Obama administration, which recently took office.
