In a surprising move, a gaming company has agreed to pay back some of the millions of kronor a company in Uppsala in eastern Sweden lost due to an employee’s gambling addiction.

https://poker.bwin.com/
“As far as I know, this is the first time this has happened,” Mattias Ekenberg with Swedish gaming addicts group Spelberoendes förening told the Upsala Nya Tidning (UNT) newspaper.

The 4.9 million kronor ($673,000) repayment deal, details of which remain secret according to a representative from the Uppsala company, comes after the woman in charge of the firm’s finances gambled away 15 million kronor in company funds.

The woman was recently sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to pay 10 million kronor in compensation to the company, which had to lay off some of its roughly 30 employees and saw what it expected to be a profitable year turn into one with a multi-million kronor loss because of the woman’s actions.

The woman’s attorney, Anders Wallin, said he plans to ask the court to reduce the amount of money his client has been ordered to pay if he can confirm the gaming company’s repayment.

In court, the woman explained that she was able to lose up to one million kronor in one night playing on the gaming company’s website.

Rules posted by the gaming firm stating that players could lose no more than €2,500 ($3,600) in a 24-hour period were not followed, according to the woman.

The company behind the gambling site also gave the woman tens of thousands of kronor in bonuses in a restricted account, which she quickly gambled away.

“It’s obvious that the gaming company understood that something was wrong. If the woman’s account of how the company acted is accurate, she has definitely been used and therefore it’s appropriate for a repayment to take place,” the prosecutor in the case, Kenneth Brattström, told the newspaper.

None of the industry experts with whom UNT spoke had ever heard of a gaming company repaying a party victimized by gambling addiction.

“I’ve never heard of anything like it,” Thomas Nilsson of the gambling research firm Spelinstitutet told UNT.

Give me a break. Dang, I ate too much food and now I am fat, I think someone should pay me back for all that food I ate. I should not have been allowed to eat that much as they should know since I am fat, that I have a problem!

Yes, this is really amazing... I think the gambling sites does this just so they will not face tougher regulations...especially when they dont follow the rules about limits...like in this case.
I think if this woman lived in the US and sued a gambling site she would have got 10 times the amount! Will will see more of this I belive...

What an incredible story! Love to see the grounds for this decision... maybe it has something to do with the woman's employer having lost so much of its funds? She has committed a criminal act by using someone else's (the company's) money... so maybe in that scenario gambling sites (and all other types of vendors) are under a legal obligation to return the money to the rightful owner... I think that must be the crux of it!

What a story! streakrockssss:bottle765

No, they pay it back cause they have let her play away waaay much more than the max casino loss limits/day... it says $max 3,600/day...but this woman have been allowed to play away alot more than $25,000/day.....they have take advantage of her addiction here by overriding their own rules which may fire back alot worse than paying her back some...

I wonder what the casino control commission says about this...if they really are what they are the should punish the casinos very hard on this...but...as the casinos pay them to exist and in some way justify the casino making money in a fair way they dont wanna bite the hand that feeds them too hard...with other words - the scratch eachothers backs.

I wonder why the casinos dont have followed the terms&cond in this case....but I belive there is nothing else than evel intensions.

Thanks Ceks for explaining! I see... Spin Palace and Riverbell are both accredited casinos... I find their behaviour surprising, yeah it must be evil intentions, just cash in the loot...

I hear ya ceks but I agree with Judy and Pevangle. She stole money and then her attorney found a loop hole.

Back in the day- before fax back fourms, utility bills and the online casinos wanting your next born male child- they had a huge problem with online players denying credit card purchaces and some scumbags would do a whole lot of charge backs. Just as we expect the casinos to be accountable- the
players have to be the same.

So the casinos started tightening up and most wanted proof. Now that was a pain in the ass for us that weren't used to these Xtra steps.

I have a compulsive/addictive personality (just a tad) and I gambled away at least the price of a couple decent compact cars. But I was accountable no one told me "hey Liz psst.. why don't you max out a few cc cards"

I never say easy come easy go cause most things in this life are hard to come and hard to go.

These chargebacks are still a problem for casinos...personally I dont understand exactly how it works.. But one reputable RTG manage told me they have to pay a $50 fee for each chargeback no matter how small it is...so if someone make 100 $2-deposits...and make chargeback on all of those it will cost the casino alot if you do the math.....

But, I think there are probably 10,000 deposits each day made by someone with a stolen credit card...and I dont think any of this money are refunded by the casino....its probably the credit card company and the insurance company to the local bank that finally pay back the stolen money to the person which had their money stolen from the credit card... In this uniqe case the casino itself pay the money back which is really strange...also the amount is very huge... only reason for this confirms that the casino itself have not followed the rules and they does this do save their own butt...

I would like to see a casino not follow their rules about withdrawal limits to the good for the player...lets say thay have a max withdrawal limit of $2000/week...adn then they suddenly pay the whole amount of a $10,000 withdrawal to a player... Deposits were instant already in 1999....now 11 years later most casino takes several days to complete a withdrawal... I cant tell you enough how much I think this sucks...its sooo very bad. The technolgy have been aroudn for many year to make this possible...still we player are the once that suffer the most always, and IF something is wrong or rules not follwed by either the player or the casino its ALWAYS to the negative to the player!...

In this case the woman clearly is very addicted and the way the casino acts by overriding the loss-limits and take advantage of a player like this makes me vomit when the casinos so often blame abusing players for that and that and how sorry it is for them and thats why they have to punish 99% of the good player from that country by 100X playthrough on bonuses or even bonuses excluded and all these securty paperworks and delay of processing...LMFAO!

Why dont they ask papers and all that before the player are approved to even make a deposit?...only one reason that is...evel intensions and $-signs in their eyes!

And the these casinos pay back only bacause they are scared when they know they have done someing very bad...it has nothing to do with the money being stolen, stolen money are just as good for them.

If the casino terms state that players could lose no more than €2,500 in a 24-hour period then yes the casino is at some fault as well and should take some responsibility for going against their rules. Just as we the player always have to follow their terms, they need to follow them as well!!!
