Gambling Tops In Canada

According to a new report from the Canadian Gaming Association, gambling is the nation’s favourite form of entertainment with new research indicating that more than 135,000 people are directly employed by the industry.
The report calls gaming ‘the country’s largest and economically significant entertainment industry’ accounting for a total of 267,000 full-time jobs contributing $14.9 billion a year to the economy.
Based on 2006 data, the industry group's report reveals that 57 percent of gambling revenues, some $8.5 billion, supports Government services and charities while the remaining $6.4 billion was spent to sustain operations, pay out as salaries and purchase goods and services.
“Gaming has grown significantly over the past decade to become an essential pillar of the entertainment industry in Canada,” said Bill Rutsey, President and Chief Executive Officer for the Canadian Gaming Association.
“It is now demonstrably clear how the majority of spending in the industry goes directly back to Canadians in the form of paycheques, construction in communities and revenues for the programmes and services and charities that we value.”
The report stated that the province of Ontario leads the pack with 102,236 jobs created by gambling followed by Quebec with 51,636, Alberta with 43,342 and British Columbia with 32,246. It said that these numbers included direct employment in gambling operations alongside jobs in gambling-related government and charity organizations and professions servicing and supporting the sector.
'The breadth and depth of the industry is significant,' said the study’s author, Robert Scarpelli, Managing Director for HLT Advisory Incorporated.
“We've always known that employment in gaming operations was robust but the total impact of the industry surprised us. After validating the results with the Statistics Canada’s Input-Output Model, we now, for the first time, have a picture of the industry's full impact right across the country.'
