In an interview with the Agence France Presse, a senior official in the Greek government has stated that the online gambling market in the country is worth an estimated €2 billion per year. This figure has not only shown the strength of the online gambling industry in Greece, but that it can provide a vital revenue source for the country. The minister indicated that the government in Greece intends to tax and regulate the industry in the near future, stating: “The propensity for gaming in Greece is among the highest in Europe and the world. This has to do with our temperament and culture ... The only thing one can do is set rules."
While the news may not fill punters with joy, it does provide some positives; most notably that senior officials are not considering outlawing online casinos or poker in the country. Indeed, it looks as though many more European countries are beginning to see the financial value of the industry and are becoming increasingly keen to tap into the money on offer. With America still taking its time with their regulation, US officials may start to look towards countries such as Greece as a litmus test for possible regulation across the States; something which would open up the industry massively and likely spark another surge in popularity.
