Also noticed I can have a profile pic no problem, but avatars for the forum it seems to restrict me to preset images (i.e. animal pictures, tv shows, etc?) Or am I missing something?

LOL @ Ian have you been arrested for streaking in the past :) Pixie don't be scared to give this a shot it is so easy to play. I know I was scared at first as well and a bit intimated but it is really easy to learn and I know that Intertops has a beginning session I think and maybe the great folks here will help you out with some advice.
