ALBANY - A lot of players are placing big bets on casinos in New York.
Twenty-two applicants have paid $1 million each for the chance to get in on casino gambling upstate, officials revealed Thursday.
The companies, including gaming giants such as Caesars Entertainment and Resorts World, paid the application fee hoping to win one of New York’s first casino licenses.

“I think you've actually had more interest and it's gone better than people suspected that it might,” Gov. Cuomo crowed.
Cuomo and other gambling advocates believe the casinos will help revive struggling communities upstate and re-capture gambling dollars now lost to other states.

State voters approved a constitutional amendment last November allowing up to seven commercially run casinos.
The initial rollout is limited to four gaming palaces in three upstate regions: the Catskills and upper Hudson Valley; the Capital region; and the Southern Tier along the Pennsylvanian border.
