WSOP Main Event Update: Gamblers Come Out In Force

The 2010 World series of Poker has been building towards the main event, and on Thursday, the final numbers were in for this year's tourney. Over 7,300 gamblers entered the main event, making it the second largest tournament ever.

In 2006, the WSOP main event attracted more players than the 7,319 that entered this week. The prize pool is also the second largest, with the first place winner taking home $8,944,138 this year. The total prize pool has $68,798,600.

Countries from all over the world have been represented at the main event in Las Vegas this week. Over a hundred countries have players hoping to take the top prize back to their hometowns. For many, it is a clear sign that the worldwide recession is coming to an end.

"Last year, the numbers were hurt by the amount of people that were struggling through the tough economic times," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz. "This year, it looks as though people have recovered, and that is being shown in the tremendous amount of players that have shown up in Las Vegas this week."

The Independence day holiday falling on a weekend also helped attendance. With the holiday on Sunday, players were able to bring their families to Sin City to enjoy the Fourth of July festivities. Then on Monday, the players readjusted their focus on poker.

The final of the four day ones took place on Thursday. Today the first of two day twos will begin. On Sunday, players will get a break before heading into the crucial part of the tournament next week. The play will continue next week until the final table is set, then play will halt until November.

In Holland we can watch "Poker After Dark" - I hope they will show footage of the WSOP event as well!

When I watch Poker after Dark on Dutch tv the players are chatting quite a bit with each other, not with the WSOP obviously... deep silence...
